About the Foundation
The Smart Foundation was created by a group of friends, family, and colleagues to honor our friend Dave, who passed away from Malignant Melanoma on September 26, 2004 at the age of 33. We would like to educate people on the risks of Melanoma, the benefits of a “balanced lifestyle”, to share preventative measures, and raise the necessary funds to support on-going research.
Malignant Melanoma is a horrendous disease and unfortunately, as we’ve seen first hand through Dave, once it spreads it can be fatal. Presently there are absolutely no known cures for metastasized (spreading) Malignant Melanoma. There are also no known treatments that will prolong life.
We want to change that. We are working with the BC Cancer Agency and specifically with Dave’s radiation oncologist, Dr. Graham Duncan, to identify those researchers looking for funds to work towards finding effective treatments, and potentially a cure for this horrible disease.
Our goal is to keep Dave’s wish, which was to give back. Dave stated that when he got well he wanted to come back to the Cancer Agency and become a volunteer. The Foundation’s wish is to make this a reality by increasing awareness, and raising the necessary funds to support on-going research. We do not want to see another valuable life such as Dave’s be taken away.
The Smart Foundation is committed to raising awareness of the risks of melanoma, while celebrating the passion and endurance of the human spirit. The Foundation’s contribution to community is one of education, funding research, and the promotion of Living Smart: finding a lifetime balance of health and happiness.
